Top 10 Industrial Conglomerate Stocks To Invest In 2014

Like a bag of produce left in the back of the fridge too long, the argument for Sysco (NYSE:SYY) being a dependable year-in/year-out performer is looking fuzzy and pretty unappetizing. I don't argue that Sysco remains the go-to name when it comes to supplying restaurants and all manner of food-serving institutions, but I do argue that that dominance isn't worth quite as much in terms of margin leverage as long believed. Still, this company reliably churns out free cash flow and that ought to keep the shares from getting all that cheap.

SEE: Earnings: Quality Means Everything

Another Soft Quarter
Fiscal fourth quarter results didn't show much of any improvement for business at Sysco. In fact, core volume and margin trends continue to be weak relative to Street expectations, and it's unclear to me that management has the ability to drive significant near-term changes.

Revenue rose 5% for the quarter, but underlying performance was quite a bit softer than that. Case volume did grow nearly 1% on an organic basis, about 1% better than the fiscal third quarter. Still, excluding food cost inflation (up 2%) and acquired revenue (up 2% net of forex), core growth was quite weak.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Best European Companies To Buy Right Now

It is difficult not to like an ambitious company like Tesla Motors (TSLA). The groundbreaking technological progress and the quality both from a performance as well as aesthetic perspective are to be admired. However, at current valuations, we believe Tesla is worth $100 per share. One of the biggest challenges moving forward is whether Tesla can carry over its domestic success to international markets.

Tesla is pursuing an aggressive path to expansion both domestically as well as internationally. The Model S has sold around 15,000 models since its debut and the demand is expected to ramp up to around 20,000 per year moving forward. Customer opinion on the model has been so far positive, scoring a perfect score in terms of safety and reliability.

Whereas domestic sales are picking up, international sales are still in early stages. Sales in North America have jumped more than 3600% year over year for the first half of 2013, whereas European revenue growth was cut by half in the same period, suggesting European sentiment for Tesla may not be as strong as it is domestically.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Working with incomplete information is something markets are used to, though, despite the volatility that it can produce. AT&T (NYSE: T  ) posted minimal gains after Spain's Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) denied rumors that AT&T was looking to buy out the European telecom giant. With its already massive position in the U.S. wireless market, AT&T will have to look abroad for substantial growth opportunities. With Telefonica having chosen to cut its dividend temporarily in order to reallocate capital, a buyout might have been good news for its shareholders; Telefonica stock is up 3.5% despite its denial. Still, given the amount of money involved -- $93 billion, according to one report -- it would take a massive commitment to get the deal done.

    Is Europe back?
Certainly, some of the enthusiasm about Europe has to do with the stabilization of economic prospects throughout the region. Germany, France, and Spain are still reporting sluggish GDP numbers, but some early signs suggest that the recession could already have hit bottom in many countries in Europe. Perhaps more importantly, just the fact that conditions on the continent haven't gotten markedly worse has seemed to bolster investor confidence. In particular, Spain's recovery has given investors in Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) new hope that efforts to keep its telecom business strong not just in Europe but in Latin America as well could bear fruit.

Top Cheapest Stocks To Own Right Now

Don't let today's performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) fool you. While the blue-chip index is down slightly, 24 of its 30 components are higher late in the trading session. The broader S&P 500 is also making moderate gains.

The discrepancy owes to the Dow's peculiar construction. Unlike other stock indexes like the S&P 500, which use market capitalization to weight the component parts, the Dow's weighting is based strictly on share price. As a result, the most expensive stock carries the most weight, and the cheapest stock the least.

The reason the Dow is underperforming its broader counterpart, in turn, is that its most heavily weighted component, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , is getting absolutely slammed today, down by 8% in afternoon trading. Selling for $190 per share, the technology and business services giant accounts for almost 11% of the Dow's daily deviations.

After the market closed yesterday, IBM reported earnings that are clearly not sitting well with investors. While the company's first-quarter net income rose by 3% to $3.4 billion, or $3 per share, it nevertheless missed analyst estimates of $3.05 per share. And on top of that, its quarterly revenue declined by 5% on a year-over-year basis.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2015: SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (SDT)

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (The Trust) is a statutory trust. The Trust was created to acquire and hold the Royalty Interests for the benefit of Trust unitholders. SandRidge conveyed to the Trust the Royalty Interests in specified oil and natural gas properties in the Mississippian formation in Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Major and Woods counties in Oklahoma (the Underlying Properties). These Royalty Interests were derived from SandRidge interests in a 36 wells and the equivalent of 123 horizontal development wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation (Trust Development Wells) within an area of mutual interest (AMI), consisting of approximately 49,600 gross acres (42,000 net acres) in the counties where the Underlying Properties are located.

Effective January 1, 2011, the Royalty Interests entitle the Trust to receive 90% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to its net revenue interest in the Initial Wells and 50% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to SandRidge net revenue interest in the Trust Development Wells. As of December 31, 2011, the Trust properties consisted of Royalty Interests in the Initial Wells, 48 wells (equivalent to approximately 53 Trust Development Wells under the development agreement) and the equivalent of approximately 70 Trust Development Wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Adam Galas]

As the chart illustrates, SandRidge's other royalty trust,SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) , which has already had its final wells drilled, has been experiencing a severe decline in distributions, a result of its massive quarterly production declines of 26%, 21%, and 22% immediately after the last well was drilled.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The problem here is that SandRidge has beendependenton asset sales and its running out of assets to sell. In addition to the Permian sale, SandRidge has now taken three royalty trusts public. One consisting of Permian Basin assets, SandRidge Permian Trust (NYSE: PER  ) and two consisting of Mississippian assets, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) . While SandRidge still owns a portion of each trust, it likely will continue to sell off its ownership stake in each trust as well as other assets it still owns. At some point SandRidge will need to live within its oil and gas cash flows, otherwise, its not worth owning.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

SandRidge has made a huge bet on the Mississippian Lime shale play, especially after selling off its Permian Basin assets late last year. Unfortunately, that bet hasn't paid off well for shareholders, as the company saw its spun-off royalty trusts SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) fail to meet their projections for distribution amounts during the first quarter. The main problem has been that wells in the Mississippian Lime have produced more natural gas than expected, and even with a slight rebound in gas prices, it still doesn't produce adequate margins compared to oil and natural-gas liquids.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and Trust II (NYSE: SDR  )
These trusts were created by SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) , with the first Mississippian Trust formed in 2010 and the second formed one year later. Both trusts own royalty interests in oil and gas properties targeting the Mississippian formation and have future upside as SandRidge drills wells as part of the areas of mutual interest.

In February 2013, it acquired the operating business and certain patent properties of MIPS Technologies, Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Finally and as for aggressive accounting, I should also note that I wrote about the stock after its last earnings report (see: Small Cap Robotics Stock iRobot Corporation (IRBT): A Buy After an Earnings Dip? ADEP & ROBO) where I mentioned post earnings CEO interviews on CNBC and Bloomberg (aggressive accounting was not covered) that would seem to cast doubt on another statement: "Spruce Point Believes IRBT Is No Longer A Robotic Innovator."

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade idea is iRobot (IRBT), which designs, develops and markets robots for consumer, defense and security, telemedicine and video collaboration markets worldwide. iRobot is set to release its numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect the company to report revenue $112.26 million on earnings of 16 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for iRobot is extremely high at 26.1%. That means that out of the 27.97 million shares in the tradable float, 7.24 ! million s! hares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 19.2%, or by about 1.16 million shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of IRBT could easily jump sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, IRBT is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been downtrending over the last month and change, with shares moving lower from its high of $48.36 to its recent low of $35.50 a share. During that move, shares of IRBT have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of IRBT have started to bounce off that $35.50 low and its moving back above its 200-day moving average. That move is starting to push shares of IRBT within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on IRBT, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out back above its 50-day moving average of $41.58 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.13 m

    Wednesday
Alon Partners USA (NYSE: ALDW  ) reports on Wednesday. Analysts see the oil refiner earning $1.36 per unit on Wednesday, and that's welcome news for investors. Alon Partners is set up as a limited partnership, passing on most of the money it makes to its stakeholders.

  • [By Robert Rapier] In last week’s issue I discussed the basics of the refining sector. Today I will provide an overview of four MLPs that hold refining assets.

To review, the refining sector was very profitable in 2012 thanks to unusually high crack spreads, which for many US refiners are approximated by the price differential between Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oils. For a more thorough explanation of this phenomenon, please refer to last week’s issue.

After years of trading at a $1 to $3 per barrel discount to WTI, Brent began fetching a premium a few years ago as a glut of crude developed in the mid-continent area of the US. In 2011 the Brent-WTI price differential increased to more than $25/bbl, and it remained historically high in 2012.

But pipeline capacity started to catch up this year, and the share prices of refiners retreated as the glut began to dissipate and the Brent-WTI differential shrank. In Q3 2012, the Brent-WTI differential averaged $17.43/bbl, but by Q3 of this year, the differential had fallen to $4.43/bbl. This promises bad news for refiners about to report Q3 earnings.

Many analysts downgraded the refining sector in Q3, but as the differential fell below $5/bbl it was hard to imagine that the news could get much worse. With poor Q3 results largely priced in, the differential subsequently rose back above $10/bbl, signaling better refining margins moving into Q4.

Refiners began to post earnings this past week, and as expected they were weak. Valero (NYSE: VLO) reported slightly higher revenues year-over-year, but net earnings fell more than 50 percent from a year ago. Nevertheless, they beat the extremely pessimistic expectations of analysts, and Valero shares rose on the news.

Phillips 66’s (NYSE: PSX) refining unit actually posted a loss, but its chemical business turned in a solid quarter which more than compensated for the disappointing refining results.

I warned last week that refiners would report relatively poor earnings for Q3, and refinery MLPs could take a hit, presenting a buying opportunity. On Nov. 6 Alon USA Partners (NYSE: ALDW) reported a loss for the third quarter of $16.1 million, or ($0.26) per unit, compared with net income of $120.4 million for the same period last year. Paul Eisman, CEO and president, cited the deteriorating margins that I discussed in last week’s issue: “Our third quarter results were impacted by a volatile and deteriorating margin environment resulting primarily from decreasing discounts for West Texas crude oil.”

  • [By Geoff Gannon] company that is in two different businesses.

This is the sort of situation where I would pay a lot of attention to the balance sheet. You aren really double counting in a stock like this. The assets are not producing the earnings. They could be separated from the business.

Unfortunately, this is a controlled company. And not a good activist target.

But you will find situations like Gyrodyne (GYRO) and Syms (SYMSQ) where at some point the company entire value really depended on its balance sheet.

Obviously when looking at things like real estate you don go by what it says on the balance sheet. You try to find a note on depreciation that breaks out land, buildings, etc. And gives information about how the company depreciates its property.

And of course you look at the ropertiesitem in the 10-K. In the U.S., you then use the information youe gathered to check county land records and things like that for more information about the property.
