Whole Foods (WFM) is taking a dive this morning after an ugly fiscal third quarter; shares of WFM stock are down about 7% today as a result.

WholeFoods Sell WFM Stock After Rotten Whole Foods EarningsBut miserable Whole Foods earnings are only the beginning. The organic food grocer is down about 37% so far in 2014 with no bottom in sight, making it one of the worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500.

The slowing sales and increased competition at WFM stock are serious signs of concern that mean today’s pain is just part of a larger downtrend, and Whole Foods earnings will continue to suffer.

Here’s why you should sell Whole Foods stock now:

Whole Foods Earnings Details

Whole Foods earnings showed decent profits, with fiscal Q3 profits of 41 cents per share. That topped expectations … however, revenue fell short of forecasts by a hair at $3.38 billion vs. $3.39 billion in forecasts.

That doesn’t sound like a big miss on sales, and admittedly WFM beat on the top line. However, Whole Foods has been a dog this year, and investors really aren’t willing to give the company the benefit of the doubt.

The organic grocer’s decline started in earnest back in November, when Whole Foods lowered its sales and profit outlook for fiscal 2014. WFM stock had a forward price-to-earnings ratio of around 40 at the time, and the Whole Foods earnings multiple coupled with lowered expectations didn’t sit well with investors. After that, Whole Foods cut its outlook again in February, then again in May.

The fact that Whole Foods is having trouble even hitting that weaker guidance is not a good thing.

Sell WFM Stock

There are those who think that this could be a great buying opportunity after the flop, now that valuations are a bit more reasonable with the forward P/E on WFM back to around 21.

However, Whole Foods still is exorbitantly overpriced compared with other grocers. Kroger (KR) and SuperValu (SVU) both have a forward P/E of about 14.

Furthermore, competition in the organics space is fierce both from direct upscale competitors like privately held Trader Joe’s and recently public Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM) as well as conventional grocery stores like Walmart (WMT) that are pushing into organics with earnest.

The problem for Whole Foods is that the valuation still is stretched, expectations were unfairly high and competition is fierce.

Despite the fact that WFM stock is still up 200% in the past five years even after this recent flop, investors would be wise to move on to greener pastures as soon as possible.

Is It Time to Buy Reynolds American Stock?

Much attention has been focused on Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) since it announced plans to acquire rival cigarette maker Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) in a $27.4 billion deal. The merger will combine the No. 2 and No. 3 U.S. tobacco companies and change the competitive landscape. Reynolds American shareholders have already reaped gains from the proposed deal; the stock is up about 18% since rumors of the merger hit the market in February. However, past returns do not indicate future results. Investors must evaluate the facts to determine whether Reynolds American still represents a good investment at its higher price. Let's take a look.

Strong competitive position

Before valuing a company, it is important to determine how industry dynamics might affect future earnings. Reynolds American has a strong competitive position that has historically given it stable earning power. After the Lorillard merger closes, which is expected to happen in the first half of 2015 if all approvals are granted, Reynolds American will have the second-largest share of the domestic cigarette market, with 34.1%. That's less than Altria Group's 50.6% cigarette share and more than U.K.-based Imperial Tobacco's 10% share of the U.S. cigarette market (after Imperial Tobacco acquires several brands as part of the Lorillard transaction). No other tobacco company comes close to matching the size of the big three.

Moreover, a significant portion of Reynolds American's business does not overlap with that of Altria and Imperial Tobacco. Altria's 51% market share is largely made up of nonmentholated cigarettes, while much of Reynolds American's cigarette sales will come from menthol cigarettes after the merger closes.

Last year, Lorillard captured a 40% share of the menthol cigarette space and Reynolds American's Camel brand captured 4%. If market share remains the same, about 44% of the combined company's cigarette sales will come from menthol cigarettes.

Don't get burned

High and stable market share, combined with strong product economics, makes it more likely that Reynolds American's earning power will grow in future years as long as menthol cigarettes remain competitive in the marketplace. And while it would be difficult for a competitor to dethrone Reynolds American as the leader in the menthol market, regulators may move to eliminate the market altogether.

If given the chance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration appears eager to remove menthol cigarettes from the market. A 2011 FDA tobacco committee report concluded that the "removal of menthol cigarettes from the marketplace would benefit public health in the United States." A judge later ruled that the committee was biased, thereby stalling regulation based on the committee's report.

However, the FDA has shown that it is leaning toward pushing for removal of products that will represent close to half of Reynolds American's post-merger sales. Whether it happens suddenly or gradually, Reynolds American's earning power is set for a decline if the FDA gets its way.

In addition, Reynolds American's stock return could be hampered by a high debt load. After the deal closes, Reynolds American will have $14.9 billion in debt and a 3.6 debt-to-EBITDA ratio, which is much higher than it has historically maintained. The company will need to spend about $2.5 billion over the next 2-3 years to pay down debt, diverting money that could have been distributed to shareholders. Spread over three years, that's about 17% of annual operating earnings that must go to servicing debt instead of into shareholders' pocketbooks.

Follow Buffett's advice

Reynolds American stock is cheap if it can maintain its earning power. The company says it will earn $5 billion in annual operating income after the merger with Lorillard is completed. That translates to $7.86 per share in operating profit and roughly $4.72 per share in after-tax earnings. Reynolds trades near $58 per share, or 12 times estimated earnings for the combined entity. At a 75% payout ratio, that would be a 6.1% dividend yield -- as big as you'll find at any large, stable company. In announcing the deal for Lorillard, Reynolds American said it is committed to a strong dividend policy, targeting a dividend payout ratio of 75%

But investors can't ignore the threat to menthol cigarettes.

One of Warren Buffett's favorite maxims is that investors don't have to swing at every pitch -- there's no penalty for waiting for a fat pitch. Reynolds American is a wide-moat company -- it is unlikely to ever cede significant market share -- but its competitive advantages won't do it much good if menthol cigarettes get the ax. It is possible -- and perhaps even probable -- that Reynolds American's earning power remains intact and its shareholders get a high return. However, with the regulatory overhang facing the company, Reynolds American is not the "fat pitch" that Buffett-type investors are looking for.

Top 5 Beverage Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Gene J. Puskar/AP OAK BROOK, Ill. -- McDonald's says a key sales metric slipped again in the U.S. as it faced "ongoing broad-based challenges" in May. The world's largest hamburger chain said U.S. sales declined 1 percent at locations open at least 14 months. The fast-food chain has been struggling to boost sales amid heightened competition and changing eating habits. Many of its core customers are also struggling financially, which has forced McDonald's to intensify its focus on value. Executives at McDonald's (MCD) have also conceded that the chain introduced too many items too quickly last year, which led to slower service and inaccurate orders. CEO Don Thompson has said the company is working with franchisees to address those problems, in part by ensuring restaurants have appropriate staffing. The decline in the U.S. comes after a 1.7 percent drop for the first three months of the year. And last year, sales at established U.S. locations slipped 0.2 percent. Overseas, a rebound in China after last year's worries about avian flu helped lift sales by 2.5 percent in its Asia, Middle East and Africa division. That in turn lifted global sales 0.9 percent for May. In Europe, McDonald's largest market, the sales figure rose 0.4 percent, boosted by improvements in the United Kingdom and France. An expanded beverage business was among the factors behind the improvements. McDonald's, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, has more than 35,000 locations around the world. Its shares were down 42 cents to $101.54 in afternoon trading Monday. The stock is up more than 5 percent so far this year.

But its current valuationt trades at 31 times earningsakes me pause. At that price, you are implicitly expecting one of two things to happen:

The American whiskey boom continues unabated for yearsnd isn replaced by something new and trendy. Brown-Forman will be acquired by a larger competitor (think Diageo or Pernod-Ricard (PDRDY)).

The first assumption is one I be hesitant to make given the whims of fashion. And the second is even less likely. Brown-Forman is family controlled, and in the past the company has very adamant about preserving its independence.

10 Best Performing Stocks To Invest In 2014

Both of my ETF picks for 2014 may sound speculative. But each, in its unique way, is not. In fact, each provides a stealthy way to offset their risks, suggests Jim Lowell, editor of The Forbes ETF Advisor.

First Trust US IPO (FPX) began trading in April 2006, and has a market value of over $300 milliont's a hidden gem that won't run the risk of selling at a premium or discount to its NAV.

The IPOX-100 US Index is made up of the 100 largest, best performing, most liquid US initial public offerings; measuring the IPO's performance during their first 1,000 trading days. (IPOs get placed into the index on their sixth trading day and remain in the index for 1000 days.)

The top three sectors are consumer discretionary (25.9%), information technology (19.3%), and health care (16.8%). The top ten holdings are Facebook, AbbVie, GM, Phillips 66, Kinder Morgan, Kraft Foods, Marathon Petroleum, HCA Holdings, Dollar General, and Delphi Automotive.

First Trust US IPO is US-centric and a great complement to my more speculative pick, WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ), which is made up of dividend paying Japanese companies and an inbuilt hedge against Yen movements versus our almighty US dollar.

While FX's (a subsidiary of Fox (NASDAQ: FOXA  ) ) new limited-run seriesFargogot a very warm reception from critics, the reaction from audiences was a little more mixed. The drama, starring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, pulled in respectable numbers with its premiere, but not the Earth-shattering ones many may have hoped for ... at least not yet.

Taking into account all of the data I have shared, I want to introduce my take on the most important names to follow. My initial list takes into account not only the market cap, but also business model and interest level. These are the stocks that I think merit the most attention (in alphabetical order):

    CannaVest (CANV.OB)GW Pharma (GWPH)MedBox (MDBX.PK)Medical Marijuana, Inc. (MJNA.PK)

CANV doesn't really trade, as it is held closely by insiders (99.7%, including MJNA). I have a few concerns, including the valuation and some near-term financial challenges typical of a start-up with just one client looking to expand its customer base, but I like the focus and the fact that it is an SEC filer with a relatively clean history (i.e. none of the baggage of some of these other companies). I have spoken to its outsourced CFO and am impressed by his background (has been CFO or held key financial roles at publicly-traded healthcare companies). CANV is the partner to MJNA that is responsible for manufacturing the CBD (Cannibidiol, the cannabinoid in marijuana that is increasingly viewed as offering substantial medical benefits). I am very concerned about the near-term financials, but this is a pure-play with probably a two-year lead over other companies. I don't see a moat in terms of intellectual property or brands, but they have a good lead in terms of sourcing of supply and penetration into potential customers. Quite simply, they don't appear to have competition at present. The company, then, is a call option on CBD demand taking off. It appears that it could be a supplier to even Big Pharma should medical marijuana research move into the mainstream.

Lenovo has research centers in Yamato, Japan; Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, China; and Raleigh, North Carolina, the United States. Advisors' Opinion:

x86: With regards to the specific x86 server business, it seems that IBM is considering the possibility of fully divesting it. According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Finally, IBM has a history of aggressive shifts to areas with better growth prospects and margins. For example, the company agreed to sell off the PC business to Lenovo (LNVGF.PK) at a moment where the PC still seemed attractive.

You're welcome. Back on March 12th when yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA), nobody cared, largely because nobody had heard of the company, and there was no particular reason anybody had to find MNGA. Now less than a full week later, this once-obscure name is all the rage; no less than 21 different market-centric websites have made mention of the stock's explosive growth over the past few days. MagneGas has been proverbially put on the map, with shares surging 90% (as of right now) since the first exploration last Wednesday. So, like I said, you're welcome.... if you got in on the 12th, or even more realistically, got in on the 14th when MNGA finally crossed above the ceiling at $0.94 I was talking about a little less than a week ago.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Truth be told, had MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA) shares not surged 400% - and subsequently tumbled - in early January, it might not even be worth looking at now. MNGA did surge then, however, so what we've seen unfurl over the past few days can't be ignored now... as it suggests this small hydrogen supplier stock is about to take flight in a more controlled and longer-lasting way than it did at the beginning of the year.

Hot Semiconductor Companies To Own In Right Now

Lately, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has been hitting record high after record high. That has a lot of people wondering whether we're entering bubble territory. But not every stock is doing so well -- in fact, some are downright cheap.

A great metric to help investors decide whether a stock is cheap is its price-to-earnings ratio. This tells you how much a stock is worth relative to how much money its company made over the past year. Right now, the average Dow stock trades for a P/E of 16.7.

For comparison's sake, the Dow's five cheapest stocks -- all listed below -- have P/Es far lower than this average. But as you'll see, that doesn't necessarily mean they're all strong buys right now.

5. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , P/E of 12
Ever since computing became more mobile and less focused on desktop PCs, investors have worried about Intel. Before smartphones came along, Intel held a commanding 80% market share in the semiconductor industry. But the company was late to the mobile game, and the core PC market is slowly eroding.

It took about three nanoseconds for the market to fall in love with Camtek LTD (NASDAQ:CAMT) a couple of days ago after it announced it would soon be introducing a 3D printer that could print circuit boards; the mere mention of the term "3d printers" is enough to incite bullish hysteria. And, it only took another three nanoseconds for the market to begin comparing CAMT to VJET... the ticker symbol for the equally-obscure (until recently anyway) 3D printer company called Voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET). Indeed, Camtek LTD was posed as "the next Voxeljet AG", which is nothing less than amazing because nobody is all that clear yet on what the real Voxeljet is. But, just for the record, enthusiasts and shareholders better hope CAMT isn't following in the footsteps of VJET, as the rug got pulled out from underneath Voxeljet AG a few days ago, shocking anyone and everyone who drank the Kool-Aid.
