FedEx(FDX) shares are flying this morning after the shipping company reported earnings this morning. The Wall Street Journal has the details:
Getty ImagesFor the quarter ended Aug. 31, FedEx reported a profit of $489 million, or $1.53 a share, up from $459 million, or $1.45 a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 2.1% to $11.02 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had projected a per-share profit of $1.50 and revenue of $10.97 billion…
The company backed its full-year earnings projection.
Citigroup’s Christian Wetherbee explains why he likes the results:
We view F1Q14 results positively as Express posted YoY improvement in operating profit and operating margin despite facing a fuel surcharge headwind , which we estimated to be ~$36m. This YoY growth comes as a result on lower pension expense and aircraft maintenance and should be improved upon in coming quarters as more cost savings initiatives in Express take hold. Looking at full year run rate profitability in Express, typical seasonality (22% of annual EBIT comes in F1Q) suggests that Express is trending toward $1.24b excluding fuel headwinds, which is in line with the better than expected results posted in F4Q13 adding a level of consistency to the improvement. We reiterate our Buy.

Denbury Resources (NYSE: DNR )
Plano, Texas-based Denbury represents a truly unique way to play the strength in the U.S. oil and gas markets. The company utilizes a process called carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2 EOR), or tertiary recovery, to produce oil from wells that otherwise might have seen their last days. Through the process, carbon dioxide is injected under high pressure into the otherwise spent wells, thereby facilitating production of large percentages of the remaining oil. - [By David Smith]
Early in the quarter Conoco announced the sale of its Cedar Creek Anticline properties to Denbury Resources (NYSE: DNR ) for slightly more than $1 billion. The smaller company is likely to make more of those assets, given its success in and predilection for enhanced oil recovery.

It's certainly in the FDA's right to ask outside experts for their opinion; I would argue it's not all that surprising even if the FDA is leaning strongly toward approving the drug. There are plenty of cases --Seattle Genetics' (NASDAQ: SGEN ) Adcetris, for example--where the FDA called a meeting only to gush all over the drug. The drug got a unanimous positive recommendation from the panel and was approved early by the FDA.

A number of analysts believe the stock of the biotech company Seattle Genetics (SGEN) has risen too high too quickly to support its current price, and have issued much lower target prices on the stocks than where it currently sits. On Thursday August 1st, Analysts at Cantor Fitzgerald issued a target price of $24 a share with a "sell" recommendation as they see the potential downside of the stock could drop 40.77% from its July 31st close. The market is in a holding pattern until 2 p.m. Wednesday, when the Fed reveals details of this week's FOMC policy meetings, and whether it's ready to begin cutting back on its main economic stimulus program. Another, less likely possibility to raise equity is through selling a part of the precious metals in a streaming deal. I can imagine Sandstorm Gold (SAND) and Silver Wheaton (SLW) would be very interested in a substantial precious metals streaming agreement. At the current gold and silver prices NGEX wouldn't even have to sell its entire precious metals production under a streaming arrangement.
