Top 10 Dividend Companies To Buy For 2014

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Stocks cratered last week, the big S&P 500 index dropping approximately 2.7% between Monday's open and Friday's close. For those keeping score, that's the worse single-week run for stocks in two years. And there could be more selling on the way.

By most accounts, the correction in the S&P 500 was well overdue. That big consensus on the need for a retracement in stocks is a concern – after all, the crowd is rarely correct en masse at key turning points. Likewise, the technical picture points to more selling as well before this correction calls it quits.

Brazilian electricity giant CPFL Energia S.A. (NYSE: CPL  ) sank 20%, and recently yielded 5.9%. Its long-term debt has been rising, largely due to acquisitions, and its free cash flow has been shrinking (and even turning negativerecently). But it has been investing heavily in alternative energies, and it serves a massive and growing market in Brazil. The country's growth has been slower than many would like, but that won't last forever.

Advisors' Opinion:

Consumer staples are great to have in a portfolio for periods of market weakness, but when investors are expecting the economy to pick up, not so much. And that, perhaps, explains why Deutsche Bank upgraded Estee Lauder (EL), and listed Avon Products (AVP) as its top Cosmetics, Household & Personal Care pick for 2014, over companies such as Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coca-Cola (KO).

  • [By Tabitha Jean Naylor]

Some were even able to rise to the prominent positions of being publicly traded companies, including Avon (NYSE: AVP) and Herbalife (NYSE: HLF). We will take a look at how these two direct-selling companies fared in 2013 and beyond.

  • [By Grace L. Williams]

You don’t have to go door to door to find dismal news about Avon (AVP) today. Between the stock tanking over 20% and the company announcements of a weak third-quarter topped with news that federal regulators are increasing the penalties to resolve its ongoing bribery probe, it one ugly afternoon for the beauty product and cosmetics company.

The Wall Street Journal Serena Ng and Anna Prior recapped Avon woes nicely this afternoon:

The government’s position, disclosed by Avon in a regulatory filing, adds another big weight on a company already struggling to turn around a string of poor results. On Thursday, the door-to-door seller of makeup and consumer products reported a third-quarter loss following a steep drop in sales in the U.S. and China.

Regarding the bribery probe, the WSJ writes:

Avon has been trying to resolve a federal bribery probe that has dogged it since 2008 and has already racked up roughly $340 million in legal and related costs. The company is in talks with the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department to settle an investigation into whether Avon breached the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by providing gifts or making payments to officials in China and other countries to get licenses to sell its products.

Analysts were mixed-to-negative in reaction to the news, revising their recommendations and slashing price targets. Rommel Dionisio of Wedbush, for one, cut the price target to $21 from $24, writing:

Avon reported third-quarter revenue of $2.323 billion and adjusted earnings-per-share of 14 cents, again short of consensus forecasts of $2.443 billion and 19 cents, respectively. Overall local currency sales fell 1%, sequentially worse than the 2% growth seen in the second quarter, as sharp declines in North America (18%) and Asia-Pacific (19%) were partially offset by growth in Latin America (6%).

We believe shares of Avon should trade at a 5%-10% disc

Advisors' Opinion:

Big competitors for BCE include Rogers Communications (RCI) and Telus (TU), though it also faces niche players such as Public Mobile, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Until recently, there was buzz that Verizon (VZ) might enter the market by buying up the latter two, though VZ apparently scrapped plans for Canadian expansion until 2014.

  • [By Victor Selva]

The company has a current ratio of 13.45% which is higher than the one registered by Liberty Interactive Corp (LINTA). But for investors looking for a higher ROE, Time Warner Cable, DISH Network Corp (DISH), Rogers Communications, Inc. (RCI), Shaw Communications, Inc. (SJR) and Tivo, Inc. (TIVO) could be better options.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Surprisingly, some companies pay dividends even when they lose money. For example, Windstream Holdings Inc. (NYSE: WIN), with a 12% dividend yield, actually pays out dividends of more than twice its earnings. However, the combination of high dividends and unprofitability are not sustainable if the economy hits another bump in the road.

Consider: The S&P 500 telecom sector has dropped 0.3% at 12:53 p.m., even as the S&P 500 has gained 0.1% and the S&P 500 utilities sector has advanced 0.1%. But telecom is a weird grouping. For starters, there are just five telecom stocks in the S&P 500: Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), CenturyLink (CTL), Frontier Communications (FTR) andWindstream Holdings (WIN).

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

The biggest new holdings are Seagate Technologyand Warner Chilcott. Other new holdings of interest include Tellabs (NASDAQ: TLAB  ) and Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN  ) . Tellabs offers a satisfying dividend yield of 3.7%, but the networking equipment maker has been facing some headwinds, such as the death of its CEO and the recent departure of its CFO. Its performance has been spotty, besting estimates in its fourth quarter but disappointing them in the recent first quarter.

  • [By Roadmap2Retire]

Investing in AT&T bolsters my portfolio with more exposure to the telecom sector - which I am bullish on. The company is the leader in the telecom world, but the current environment provides for some interesting points. Some of the factors that contributed in my decision to initiate this position.

Dividend income - AT&T provides great current income with prospects of dividend growth in the future. Dogs of the Dow - Some people use this investing strategy to beat the market. While my main goal is not to beat the market, this strategy provides some visibility into the under-to-fairly valued stocks in the DJIA. The strategy, for those unfamiliar, is simply to invest in the highest yielders of the DJIA called the Dogs of the Dow. AT&T is the currently the highest yielder in DJIA. Solid revenue growth & EPS growth: After minimal gains from 2009-2012 in revenue, and a dip in diluted EPS from 2010 to 2011, AT&T has turned the ship around and the current trend is pointing upward. DirecTV (DTV) acquisition - AT&T announced that it intends to acquire DTV, which could provide with considerable amount of revenue growth in the future. Possibility of REIT spinoff - The recent news of Windstream (WIN) spinning off a publicly traded REIT resulted in speculation that other telecom providers would follow suit. If AT&T follows in the footsteps of WIN, that would result in unlocking a lot of value for shareholders. In-Car 4G LTE - AT&T has been at the forefront in this field having secured deals with car manufacturers such as Audi, Tesla (TSLA), General Motors (GM) etc. AT&T could potentially add millions of new subscribers to their customer base as the current and future generation of cars come with a 4G LTE-capability.

The bottom line is that the companies that control the data pipes in an ever-connected and integrated digital world will command the marketplace. Telecom service providers (alongside cable service providers) will be able to

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Richard Stavros]

Exelon Corp (NYSE: EXC) plan to acquire Washington, DC-based Pepco Holdings Inc (NYSE: POM), a regulated, wires-only utility, would reduce Exelon earnings volatility, while offering improved economies of scale to both firms, which operate in neighboring Northeast service territories (See Chart A).

  • [By Sally Jones]

    Highlight: Pepco Holdings Inc. (POM)

The POM share price is currently $18.17 or 20.0% off the 52-week high of $22.72. Its yield is 5.90%.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Exelonshares have been no doubt strong year-to-date, but we think the improvement in underlying business fundamentals is far from reflected in the share price, particularly after the pullback around equity to fund Pepco (POM).
