Yesterday's sharp gains put a bounce in investors' steps, but today the markets aren't going for a repeat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) has sunk 72 points, or 0.47%, as of 2:15 p.m. EDT, and�Verizon's (NYSE: VZ ) stock is the anchor around its neck, along with downbeat global growth forecasts. Most members of the index are down today, with Verizon and several other big movers falling by more than 2%. Let's catch up on the top stories you need to know.
China slows further
The International Monetary Fund cut its Chinese growth projections for 2013 and 2014 today, now expecting the world's second-largest economy to grow by 7.75% per year after earlier projecting 8% growth this year and 8.2% next year. China's slowdown from its previous double-digit-percentage economic growth has hurt companies counting on the developing economy to fuel sales. Industrials in particular have been hit hard: Major China manufacturing player Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) saw its Asia-Pacific retail sales fall at least 20% in each of the last three months as reduced Chinese infrastructure spending hurts demand. Caterpillar's stock hasn't reacted badly to the news, however, with shares gaining 0.5% so far today to defy the Dow's drop.

There may never be a better time to buy designer totes, satchels or shoulder bags. This is the time of year when Coach (COH), Michael Kors (KORS) and Kate Spade (KATE) usually discount some of their dated product lines ahead of new fall arrivals. But the markdowns may be even juicier this summer. Gross margins are contracting, and inventory is starting to build up. This is bad news for handbag makers and investors, but it should be good news for folks looking to buy a luxury purse. Let's Fly Coach Coach is the largest of the three luxury handbag makers, but that's about to change. After yielding market share to Michael Kors and to a lesser extent Kate Spade in recent years, analysts see Michael Kors overtaking Coach this upcoming holiday shopping season. Coach isn't doing very well. Sales and adjusted earnings are fell 7 percent and 35 percent, respectively, in its latest quarter. However, investors were braced for an even sloppier showing. Strong international sales, particularly in China, helped offset some but clearly not all of the domestic shortfalls (Coach suffered a 16 percent decline in North American sales). Coach was the only one of the three publicly traded luxury handbag makers to see its stock climb the trading day after announcing results. The other two are growing, but there are problematic signs for investors across all three players. Calling a Spade a Spade Kate Spade is the smallest of the three, and it was the last of the three to report. After unloading its Juicy Couture apparel and Lucky Brand premium denim lines, Kate Spade has been able to focus on its booming premium handbag and accessories business. When traders think of post-surgical wound management stocks, they may first think of names like Cytomedix, Inc. (OTCBB:CMXI) or Alliqua Inc. (OTCMKTS:ALQA). And well they should. Both companies have something of a history in the arena. Sometimes those offers just don't make sense: Boards aren't ready to sell; shareholders think their stock is worth more, and vote down the deals. AstraZeneca (AZN) recently became the latest big company to refuse a suitor's advances. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (PFE) was shot down last week after making a $117 billion offer for AstraZeneca. However, for every Facebook (FB) that correctly scoffed at a large figure (offered $1 billion, it's worth north of $150 billion today), there are many companies that lived to regret turning down. Here are five companies whose owners really should have taken the money and run. Circuit City Circuit City is gone. The consumer electronics superstore chain filed for bankruptcy, liquidating all of its stores in 2009. It didn't have to go out that way. There was no shortage of companies proposing to take over the once-vibrant retailer. It turned down private equity firms that wanted to pay $8 a share in 2003 and then $17 a share in 2005. Blockbuster Video -- yes, that Blockbuster -- even started to make buyout overtures in 2008. Blockbuster was hoping that teaming up with Circuit City would create "an $18 billion retail enterprise uniquely positioned for the convergence of media content and electronic devices." It never panned out. Circuit City was out of business less than a year later. Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN ) announced earnings of $0.04 per share, which beat expectations by $0.02 and sent the shorts running for cover. The stock rocketed up 18% until people actually read the press release and found that Groupon is projecting a loss rather than a profit for the coming quarter. This is surprising, since revenue guidance was $50 million more than expected. So, the company is closing more business but making less money.

AOL (AOL) �plummeted 22% after the Internet company missed earnings estimates. Groupon Inc. (GRPN) �also saw its stock plunge 18% a day after the company reported a wider loss.
